Edit: With newer updates to redstone, the observers in the "gearbox" now provide an extra tick when retracted and cause the redstone blocks to detach. To fix this, I simply aimed the observers' output end sideways, so the redstone conducts through the block but doesn't give the extra pulse to the pistons underneath. Of course, you can just use any transparent block that allows you to place redstone atop it, but observers being translucent make them appealing in my eyes.
Instead of giving each new version of this ongoing project its own video, I thought I'd catch everyone up with just one. These are the five demo versions of a working car engine built in vanilla Minecraft, one of which will go inside of a car I build someday.
