We rolled into Smithton, Tasmania and set up at the beautiful free RV camp near Tall Timbers — a peaceful spot backing onto a pond filled with ducks and water hens, providing the perfect entertainment after a day on the road. With meals, a bottle shop, and accommodation options close by, it’s an ideal stop for caravaners exploring Tasmania’s northwest.
After settling in, we enjoyed a walk to the Smithton Information Centre to plan our next day’s adventures, then took a stroll around town with scenic views of Duck River and Duck Bay. The relaxed coastal atmosphere and friendly country town feel made Smithton an easy place to slow down and enjoy the moment.
We wrapped up the day back at Tall Timbers, enjoying a drink by the water — our way of giving back to a place that welcomed us so well.
The next day brought something truly special, especially for anyone with a farming background. We experienced cheese tasting and watched cows calmly come in to be milked by fully automated milking machines. For retired farmers, this modern technology is incredible to see — a fascinating blend of traditional farming values and cutting-edge innovation. How far farming has come!
Smithton surprised us in all the best ways — from peaceful free camping and coastal walks to the future of farming. A must-visit stop for caravaners, nature lovers, and anyone curious about how technology is shaping rural life.
