The circle dances have a very ancient origin. In the Middle Ages the circle dance accompanied by singers was called Carol, from the old French "carole" in turn derived from the Latin "choraula". The themes of the songs could be both sacred and profane. These circle dances were very popular as dance music from the XIIth to XIVth centuries, after which their use expanded as processional chants sung at feasts, while others were written to accompany representations of Mystery Plays, the earliest representations formally developed in the Medieval Europe focused on the representation of biblical stories accompanied by songs and music.
This recording was made by the ensemble "The New York Pro Musica Antiqua" in 1953 and its focuses on English Christmas Carols.
