The Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps, also known as Baiame’s Ngunnhu, are one of the oldest known human-made structures in the world. Located on the Barwon River in Brewarrina, New South Wales, these intricate stone formations reflect the deep knowledge and ingenuity of Aboriginal Australians in managing natural resources.
The fish traps were constructed by the Ngemba people, with contributions from neighboring Aboriginal groups such as the Morowari, Paarkinji, Weilwan, Barabinja, Ualarai, and Kamilaroi. According to Aboriginal tradition, the ancestral creation being Baiame designed the traps by casting his net over the river, with his sons Booma-ooma-nowi and Ghinda-inda-mui helping to shape them. These traps were not only a source of food but also a central hub for trade, social gatherings, and ceremonial events.
The Brewarrina Fish Traps consist of a complex network of dry-stone rock weirs and pens, strategically placed to guide fish swimming upstream into holding ponds. The design allowed for efficient fish harvesting, with Aboriginal people using their hands, spears, or barriers to catch fish. The traps were adaptable to seasonal changes and varying water levels, ensuring a sustainable food source throughout the year.
The Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Registerin 2000 and the Australian National Heritage List in 2005. Today, they remain a vital cultural landmark, symbolizing the resilience and advanced ecological knowledge of Aboriginal Australians. The Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum, located nearby, provides further insight into the history and significance of the site.
The Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps stand as a remarkable testament to Indigenous innovation and environmental stewardship. Their enduring presence highlights the sophisticated engineering skills of Aboriginal Australians and their deep connection to the land. As one of the oldest human constructions, they continue to inspire admiration and respect for the rich cultural heritage of Australia’s First Nations peoples.
