In her article, Christina Koulouri reflects on how the trauma of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, one of the most significant events in modern Greek history, manifested in the "Trial of the Six" in 1922 – and the unexpected retrial in 2010. In the aftermath of this disastrous military defeat, six political/military leaders were executed in November 1922. In 2010, they were acquitted posthumously.
In conversation with Carina Siegl, Professor Koulouri puts into perspective the significance of the trials. Together they explore how courts try to interfere with historiography and how politicians make use of historical narratives for their own ends. Eventually, the discussion boils down to questions of national identity and sociopolitical division.
