In the first episode of our new FOCUS interview series, Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer (University of Oldenburg) talks to Carina Siegl from PHW Central Office about his text titled "Vae, puto deus fio: How to make a bad emperor".
You can read the article here: https://public-history-weekly.degruyt...
They discuss the process by which Roman Emperors were either committed to or banned from collective memory and explore who got to exercise control over memory and oblivion. As is often the case, the conversation quickly turns to the present and how what some call "cancel culture" might actually have the opposite effect: doesn't "cancelling" someone mean that we end up giving them all the more attention?
Finally, Michael Sommer gets to outline his very own memorial project to honour the "good" emperors who he thinks deserve to be remembered more frequently.
What do you think, are you envious of historians in the year 2300?
