The steps are:

1. From the self-assessment home screen, click on "HMRC authorisation".
2. Before continuing, you must be signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Links to HMRC are on the authorization screen.
3. Ensure you meet HMRC's MTD requirements, then sign up and opt-in for your chosen tax year.
HMRC can take up to 72 hours to confirm the MTD opt-in.
4. Once HMRC confirms the MTD opt-in, click on "Continue to HMRC".
5. This redirects you to the HMRC site, where you will be prompted to authenticate using your Government Gateway ID and password.
6. If you have multiple Gateway IDs, ensure you enter the one associated with your self-assessment account.
If you enter the wrong ID, you will receive the response, "The client or agent is not authorized," and you will need to click "Start" again.
