This drone video briefly outlines the tragic and relatively recent history of Memaloose Island, a small basalt formation in the Columbia River Gorge near The Dalles, Oregon, which, for countless generations, was a sacred burial place for local Chinook and other Native peoples, who laid their dead on the rock in cedar vaults or wrapped in mats—giving rise to the name Memaloose from the Chinook Jargon for “to die” or “land of the dead.”
The journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition recorded the island in 1806 as being lined with sepulchers full of bodies. But when settlers became increasingly aware of the sacred burial site after the death of Victor Trevitt of The Dalles in 1883, which brought the hallowed ground to the wider public's attention, Memaloose lived out the darkest chapter in its history, one which to this day provides little closure for the descendants of those whose final resting place was so thoroughly desecrated and destroyed.
