💬 About the Track:
This song is a story that deserves to be told, as it exemplifies multiple aspects of the American dream, all wrapped up in one of the O.G. Americana origin stories. The original 18- '49ers gold rush.
When James Marshall reached into the creek to find what was shining off the bottom while building Sutter's Mill along the American River- about 45 miles from present day Sacramento, he would pull up flakes of shiny yellow metal larger than anyone could believe, yet simple tests would lead them to a quick lye boil test that still could not change their shock, gold, and not just any bits of gold, huge placer gold that had broken off mother-lodes of ore, making its way by weather and disaster into the river, settling under boulders and deep spots long ago, placer gold this large meant one thing: world changing gold existed in the hills around them.
Marshall would consult with with his boss and the men were sworn to silence, the mill was not fully built yet, and a mining rush would ruin their plans, they also needed time to get mineral rights for the land for themselves.
Secrets like this are hard kept however, and many of the men working for the mill were from a Mormon settlement not far away. An entrepreneur, newspaper owner and outfitter from this settlement, was just the man to blow the lid.
Sam Brannan would hear the rumors and travel to the mill, weaseling an excuse to see the gold, he decided he would let the gold come to him, and quietly bought up every pick, shovel, and gold pan in the area, placing them in his own shop.
Brannan then walked into San Francisco, with a vial of panned flakes from the river, crying gold like a paper boy. The city emptied in days, ships even began to rot from lack of help, word made its way east and the rush was on. Brannan would become the first millionaire of the 49ers, never swinging a pick.
The American dream has its winners, and its losers, and James Marshall, having little experience in anything mining, would never actually strike real gold for himself. Sutter's mill, a saw mill in the middle of gold fever, would not be completed, the workers rushing to get claims before the hordes arrived.
The man who started it all, would tragically, somewhat fade into history as a name only, trying farming and other careers with mediocre success, eventually garnering a small pension from the State of California for his contribution to history, and making a few appearances on speaking tours.
