Born March2, 1793, Samuel Houston would be raised in frontier Tennessee and served as governor before scandal sent him into Cherokee societies.

As commander general of the Texian Army he would directly lead the final assault and defeat of Santa Anna and secure Texas independence.

Sam Houston would go on to serve as the first president of the new Texas republic, and later US senator and Governor of Texas, he would oppose secession and lose the office, as he refused to swear loyalty to the Confederacy.

Sam would retire and die in Huntsville, Texas, in 1863, leaving a legacy intertwined with the political and cultural formation of the American Southwest
