静岡と愛知の県境に近く、ミカン畑が広がる三ケ日の古刹「摩訶耶寺庭園」は日本の中世を代表する庭園だ。鎌倉時代に造られたと推定されており、静岡県や東海地方では最古級に当たる。築山は、自然の山がそのまま庭の中に入って来たような美しい曲線を描いており、なだらかな線が特徴の「大和絵」の日本的な美の影響が認められる。

Located near the border of Shizuoka and Aichi Prefectures, *Makayaji Temple Garden* is a medieval garden representative of Japan, set beside the ancient temple of Makayaji in Mikkabi, an area known for its sprawling mandarin orange groves.
Believed to have been created during the Kamakura period, it is considered one of the oldest surviving gardens in Shizuoka Prefecture and the wider Tokai region.
Its tsukiyama (artificial hill) forms graceful curves, as if a natural mountain had gently entered the garden itself. The soft, flowing lines reflect the influence of traditional Japanese aesthetics seen in Yamato-e painting, characterized by its elegant and subdued beauty.
