In an unexpected turn of events, a class of grade 4 learners from Athlone Park Primary school were witness to a real life rescue as a member of the public was caught in a rip current on Durban’s Addington beach.
While enjoying a school excursion to the beach to learn about water safety and lifesaving as part of Lifesaving SA’s Watersmart program, the man was spotted by Lifesaving SA voluntary lifeguards and cameramen who were with the children at the time. The three Lifesaving SA lifeguards quickly responded to the man and rescued him from near drowning; a very different outcome should the lifeguards not have been at the beach at the time.
Sadly, over 1500 people die annually in South Africa from drowning and drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death after road accidents. More than half of these are children under the age of 15 years.
