Ingrown Toenail Management
Ingrown nails occur when the edges of a nail grow into the skin, causing irritation, redness, swelling, pain, inflammation, and infection. This condition can affect both men and women of all ages, with the big toes being the most susceptible. While other toenails and fingernails can also be affected, the risk is generally lower.
If left untreated, ingrown nails can pierce the skin, leading to wounds and allowing infections to develop. While antibiotics can treat the infection, they will not cure the ingrown nail itself. Factors contributing to ingrown toenails include improper nail trimming, tight footwear causing toe crowding, and foot trauma.
Protecting the affected toe from infection is crucial. Cleaning with saline solution, applying antiseptic, and covering with a band-aid can help. However, home remedies may not prevent a recurrence, so it is advisable to consult a podiatrist for ingrown toenail management.
Management typically involves removing the embedded nail spike, trimming the nail to promote proper growth, and applying dressings to aid healing and reduce infection. Regular dressing changes are necessary.
If you are suffering from recurring ingrown toenails, it is well-advised to see a podiatrist to determine if you are a suitable candidate for an ingrown toenail procedure.
