My recent video about the Kangxi emperor (you can view it here • Who Was the Longest Reigning Emperor of Im... ), mentioned how he was the longest ruling emperor in Imperial China having ruled for sixty-one years.
However, his grandson, the Qianlong Emperor himself ruled for sixty years until he chose to abdicate so as not to take that title of longest ruler away from his grandfather, then ruling as the former emperor until his death some three years later.
The Qianlong Emperor was the fifth emperor of the Qing dynasty and reigned from 1735 until his abdication in 1796, although he retained ultimate power until his death in 1799, making the Qianlong Emperor one of history’s longest reigning and longest living monarchs when he died at the age of 87.
Qianlong was a highly ambitious military leader, the fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor, he led military campaigns into Inner Asia, Burma, Nepal and Vietnam while suppressing internal rebellions in Jinchuan and Taiwan.
Domestically, Qianlong was a major patron of the arts as well as a prolific writer. He sponsored the compilation of the Siku Quanshu (the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries), the largest collection ever made of Chinese history, and oversaw extensive literary inquisitions that suppressed some 3,100 works.
In 1796, Qianlong abdicated after a reign of 60 years to allow his grandfather, the Kangxi Emperor, to remain the longest-reigning Qing emperor at 61 years. Even after being succeeded by his son, the Jiaqing Emperor, Qianlong continued to rule as the former emperor (Emperor Emeritus) until his death in 1799.
Qianlong ruled until the end of the era known as the High Qing, the zenith of the dynasty’s power, influence, and prosperity. During his sixty year reign the empire had the largest population and economy in the world and reached its greatest territorial extent. While, at the same time, military weakness after almost constant warfare, endemic corruption, inefficiency within the imperial court and a stagnation of civil society ushered in a gradual decline and the ultimate demise of the Qing empire.
