What if stress isn’t the real problem… but your perception of control is?
In this video, we break down a 2025 neuroscience study by Texas A&M researcher Gustavo E. Tafet and University of Madrid researcher Tomas Ortiz Alonso exploring learned helplessness vs. learned controllability and how your mindset literally shapes your brain.
Research shows that your locus of control may have a stronger impact on your biology than the stressor itself. When you believe you have control over your life (internal locus of control), your brain supports stronger executive function, emotional regulation, and resilience. But when you believe external forces control everything (learned helplessness), it can impair key brain regions linked to planning, working memory, judgment, and flexibility.
We explore:
-What learned helplessness does to your brain
-How the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex affects planning & cognitive flexibility
-How the ventromedial prefrontal cortex influences emotional regulation
-Why prolonged uncontrollable stress rewires neural pathways
-How to build learned controllability through small wins
-Practical ways to strengthen an internal locus of control
In an upcoming video, we’ll cover how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help you rewire thinking patterns and build mental resilience.
