The Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 divided the Americas between Spain and Portugal, with Spain claiming the majority and Portugal primarily focusing on Brazil. Portuguese contact with Native Americans was a complex and multifaceted interaction marked by both cooperation and conflict. Initially, the Portuguese sought alliances with indigenous peoples for labor and knowledge to aid in their colonization efforts. However, the relationship also involved forced labor, enslavement, and wars of extermination as the Portuguese expanded their control and demand for labor increased.
