As with many other attacks in jiu-jitsu, the baseball bat choke has a number of effective variations. They all follow a similar theme - regardless of entry, they begin with your arms uncrossed and finish with your arms crossed. Since this entry is much less threatening at the outset than the cross-choke (or juji-jime), you can often find your way to the finish before your partner has begun to address your grips.
For this baseball bat choke variation, we take advantage of one of the major virtues of training jiu-jitsu with the gi - namely the chance to use the “skirt” of the gi. When wrapped around your partner’s shoulders, the bottom half of the jacket becomes like a rope controlling your partner’s upper body. This means that unlike the traditional double lapel entry to the baseball bat, this variation gives you extra-powerful control over the far shoulder. Plus the open skirt grip gives you a little better hold for your finish.
(Also note that technically, the “baseball bat choke” is mostly a strangle, working on the carotid arteries rather than the airway).
