Cross-Choke Elevator Dilemma (BJJ) from Butterfly Guard: we believe that there’s NO better way to build an advantage in jiu-jitsu than to create a dilemma for your partner. In this sequence we take a stock but highly-effective technique - the cross-collar strangle, or “cross-choke” - and magnify its effectiveness with the threat of a sweep.
One of the problems you’ll often face in working the cross-collar strangle from butterfly guard is your partner’s interfering hands, which can easily interrupt your grip and prevent you from getting the ball rolling. Even if you do manage to lock on the strangle, you’ll face resistance as they work to loosen your hold or to circle the arms to the inside.
All of this changes the moment you start to elevate them. Once their hips rise above their head and their knees leave the ground, your partner has to make a choice: do I put my hands on the ground, prevent the sweep and open myself to the choke? Or do I keep my hands where they are, defend the choke and concede the sweep? This is a classic dilemma, the sort that creates plenty of opportunities to reverse, off-balance and submit.
