Fukushima is the southernmost prefecture of the Tōhoku region and the third largest in Japan by area, covering about 13,784 km².
The capital is Fukushima City, with a population of about 280,000. Other important cities include Kōriyama, Iwaki, and Aizuwakamatsu. It is divided into three main regions: Hamadōri (coastal), Nakadōri (central basin), and Aizu (mountainous west). Scenic sites include Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro.
The flag was adopted on October 30, 1967. It shows a stylized white form of the hiragana of “Fukushima” (ふ, fu) in circular shape, representing harmony, placed on a deep orange field.
