Nagano is a landlocked prefecture located in the Chūbu region of central Honshu. It covers about 13,561 km², making it the fourth largest prefecture in Japan by area.
The capital city is Nagano, with a population of about 360,000, and the prefecture’s total population is roughly 2 million. Other notable cities include Matsumoto, Ueda, and Suwa. Its ski resorts include Hakuba, one of the 1998 Winter Olympics venues, which Nagano hosted.
The flag was adopted on 20 March 1967. It features a white Katakana character ‘ナ’ (Na) in the form of a bird in flight inside a circle on an orange field. The emblem also represents a mountain reflected in a lake.
