📖 About Zeno of Citium
Zeno of Citium (c. 334–262 BCE) was a Greek philosopher and the founder of Stoicism. After losing everything in a shipwreck, he turned to philosophy in Athens, studying under Cynic and Socratic thinkers before developing a systematic vision of human flourishing grounded in reason and nature.
Zeno taught in the Stoa Poikile, the painted porch from which Stoicism takes its name. His philosophy united logic, physics, and ethics into a single coherent system aimed at one goal: living in accordance with nature through reason and virtue.
Although none of Zeno’s original works survive intact, his ideas shaped generations of Stoic thinkers, including Cleanthes, Chrysippus, Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius. Core elements of his thought include:
Virtue as the sole good
Reason as the defining human faculty
Emotional freedom through correct judgment
Acceptance of fate guided by rational agency
Universal moral community beyond borders
Zeno’s Stoicism is not a collection of techniques but a complete philosophy of life — one that offers clarity, resilience, and moral purpose in the face of uncertainty, loss, and change.
