📖 About Epictetus
Epictetus (c. 50–135 CE) was born a slave in the Roman Empire and later became one of the most influential Stoic philosophers in history. Unlike emperors or senators, Epictetus lived without wealth, status, or political power. His authority came entirely from the clarity and rigor of his thinking.
He taught philosophy in Rome until being exiled by Emperor Domitian, after which he founded a school in Nicopolis. His teachings were written down by his student Arrian and preserved as the Discourses and the Enchiridion (Handbook), texts that have shaped Stoic thought for nearly two thousand years.
Epictetus taught that true freedom has nothing to do with external circumstances. A person can be enslaved and still free — or powerful and utterly trapped — depending entirely on how they use their mind.
His philosophy is not theoretical. It is demanding, practical, and relentlessly focused on action. Epictetus trained his students to face:
Illness, poverty, exile, and death
Insults, injustice, and loss
Fear, desire, and emotional disturbance
The illusion that happiness comes from outside ourselves
This isn’t abstract philosophy. It is mental training for real life — a system designed to produce unbreakable inner freedom, regardless of external conditions.
