In this episode of my People of Long-Term Care series, I introduce you to Cheryl Burns, a Dietary Aide in Food Services at Northwood.
I first met Cheryl when Heather was admitted, and over time, like so many of the staff on the ninth floor, she has become someone I truly consider a friend. I trust her, she trusts me, and I deeply admire what she brings to her work every single day.
Cheryl does far more than deliver meals. She meets residents exactly where they are, takes time to connect with them, shares a laugh, and keeps things light, all while making sure people receive the best care possible through food. Sometimes that means working closely with the dietitian to ensure meals are prepared in the right format. Other times it means adding variety, paying close attention to what residents are eating, and quietly feeding that information back into the system so everyone is better supported.
It is thoughtful, skilled, compassionate work, and it often happens behind the scenes.
Cheryl is one of those everyday heroes of long-term care, and I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I enjoyed talking with her.
