When 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene reacts with ozone (ozonolysis), it produces two molecules of acetone (propanone). The reaction proceeds through an unstable ozonide intermediate, which then breaks down into the final carbonyl compounds.
Here's a breakdown of the reaction:
Ozonolysis: The double bond in 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene is cleaved by ozone (O₃).
Ozonide Formation: An unstable cyclic ozonide intermediate is formed.
Cleavage and Carbonyl Formation: The ozonide decomposes, resulting in two acetone molecules (CH₃COCH₃).
Reductive Workup (optional): If a reducing agent like zinc and water is present, the reaction is called reductive ozonolysis. In this case, the acetone is the final product.
