On 27th October 2020, the Indian Ocean Working Group hosted the second webinar of The Loiy Hamad Lecture Series on the book Imperial Mecca: Ottoman Arabia and the Indian Ocean Hajj. The lecture was given by Professor Michael Cristopher Low, Assistant Professor of History at Iowa State University and currently a Senior Humanities Research Fellow at NYU Abu Dhabi and the author of the Book Imperial Mecca. The session was moderated by Professor Uday Chandra, Assistant Professor of Government at Georgetown University in Qatar.
The webinar presented an intriguing analysis of British India’s transimperialism through the lens of the pilgrimage to Mecca. Drawing on Ottoman and British archival sources, Imperial Mecca analyzes how the Hijaz and the steamship era pilgrimage to Mecca simultaneously became objects of Ottoman modernization, global public health, international law, and inter-imperial rivalries during the late 19th and early 20th century.
