Although not strictly a Halloween story, this one does feature pumpkins. "The Pumpkin Giant" is a tale about a terrible giant who devours children. His head may very well be seen as a jack o' lantern.
Tales of giants are nothing new in European folklore, but pumpkins are a different story. The original jack o' lanterns were made from turnips, since pumpkins did not exist in Europe in the days of the sort kingdoms and knights and ladies far and whatnot that are so heavily featured in children's stories. Pumpkins came along later when they were imported from the New World.
"The Pumpkin Giant" was written by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and appeared in a collection of the children's stories from 1893.
