Inspired to try his hand at writing by the stories he read in Amazing Stories Magazine, and having his first work published there, Jack Williamson went on to become one of the stalwarts of the science fiction genre, and one of the idols of a young Isaac Asimov, who was thrilled to receive a postcard from him. Williamson is perhaps most famous today for his “Legion of Space” series of novels. He wrote other science fiction novels and many short stories for pulp magazines such as “Strange Tales,” “Wonder Stories,” “Weird Tales,” and “Worlds of If.” He also wrote the newspaper strip “Beyond Mars” in the early 1950’s, which was based on one of his own works.
It was Williamson who coined the term “terraforming” in 1942 in a story for Astounding Science Fiction Magazine. After the death of Robert Heinlein in 1988, to Williamson was conferred the title of the "Dean of Science Fiction."
In this episode, we’ll hear one of his tales regarding the dangers of space exploration in “The Masked World,” which appeared in the August 1963 issue of “Worlds of Tomorrow” Magazine.
