THE STORY:
Dougie MacLean was just 23, hitchhiking through France, broke and homesick, when this song poured out of him in just a few minutes. "Caledonia" - the ancient Roman name for Scotland - captured that deep longing for home that anyone who's traveled far away understands.

The song didn't become widely known until the 1990s when it was used in a Scottish tourism commercial. But once people heard it, they never forgot it. It's now played at weddings, funerals, and anywhere Scots gather far from home.
