Summer has settled deep into the forest. Warm wind moves through the pines, the grass grows high around the clearing, and the days feel endless. Out here the work never stops, but it is the kind of work that matters.

This week we start building with the wood we’ve gathered. Simple projects, shaping boards and beams into something useful for the cabin and the life we are building here. Every cut and every nail brings the place closer to the home I imagine.

The old metal scrap that has been scattered around the property for years is finally gone. A truck came down the narrow path and loaded it all up – rusted barrels, broken tools, and pieces of machinery that have been sinking into the ground for decades. Watching it leave felt like clearing the last shadow of the past from this place.

Inside the cabin, the smell of fresh wood is joined by something new. For the first time here, I bake an apple pie. The oven warms the room and the scent of apples and cinnamon fills the air while Billy and Lucky sleep nearby. Out here, small moments like this feel bigger.

Evenings are long in the Finnish summer. When the day’s work is done, I sit outside and watch the last light touch the treetops, knowing that every step – from clearing the land to building by hand – is another piece of this life I chose.
