I Saved an Abandoned Log Cabin in Finland
The rain came early this morning and stayed with me through the long quiet hours. It drummed on the old roof of the abandoned cabin I now call home and it felt almost like the forest reminding me that it is still very much alive. Billy and Lucky curled close by the stove where the fire gave off a gentle orange glow. The kind of warmth a man does not just feel on the skin but somewhere deeper. Days like this make you grateful for even the smallest comforts.

Work on the foundation for the guest cabin continues little by little and each board finds its place. Nothing happens fast out here and that is the way it should be. The land teaches patience and it rewards those who do not rush its lessons. I spent part of the day leveling the ground and setting new posts while the rain settled into a soft steady rhythm. The kind that makes you lift your head once in a while just to listen. The forest holds its breath on days like this and even the wind seems to respect the silence.

Billy complained at first. He has never been a friend of wet weather. Lucky on the other hand turned the whole thing into a game. She chased raindrops on the windows and then followed me outside darting under the lumber pile and springing out with the kind of joy only a young cat can carry. Watching her reminded me that even on the hardest days there is room for playfulness. It is a good reminder for a man who sometimes forgets.

When the work was done I returned to the cabin and dried both of them with an old towel. The stove gave off a steady warmth and the smell of burning wood filled the room. I sat for a while and listened to the rain settle into the night. There is a kind of peace in living this way. A simple peace that comes from doing honest work with your hands and returning to a small cabin that shelters you from the world.

This place was once forgotten but it is starting to feel like a home again. The guest cabin slowly takes form and each day brings it one step closer. The forest watches every move and the cats keep me company. Out here a man learns that progress does not need to be fast. It only needs to be steady and true.
