App Store Gatekeepers & the EU Digital Markets Act: Viktoria Robertson, Benedict Evans, Tim Cowen

Описание: The DMA has introduced a long list of obligations for gatekeepers coordinating various app store related markets. The compliance with these obligations is anticipated to be thorny and full of juristic, economic and technical controversies.

Last week the Commission hosted a dedicated Stakeholder Workshop focusing on this very issue.

To reflect on the outcomes of the event we have invited three impactful speakers known for their well-articulated but very different views on the issue:

Prof. Viktoria Robertson – Vienna University of Economics and Business and the University of Graz had participated in the Commission’s Stakeholder Workshop. Viktoria represents an academic position on the matter.

Benedict Evans – a well-known independent analyst and commentator on the broad scope of issues affected by the new rules. His position reflects a more sceptical approach to the DMA in general and the app store specific provisions specifically.

Tim Cowen – chair of the antitrust practice at Preiskel & Co., an established antitrust practitioner. On this specific matter Tim had kindly informed the audience that he has done a complaint for the Movement for an Open Web – an organisation known to be among the vocal supporters of the new rules. We may imply thereby Tim's more supportive position to the limitation of the power of gatekeepers in these markets.

The conversation was lively and while disagreeing with each other on various issues during the discussion all speakers have ended the meeting amicably, offering some very helpful recommendations for students.
