Javier Espinoza (Financial Times) – EU corespondent
Lewis Crofts (MLex) – Editor-at-Large
We live in surreal times. Not only Competition Law had moved from being an insulated technical cul-de-sac of Law & Economics to the frontpages and headlines in the leading general media – but also, as evident from this video, the surreality of the times is that an academic feels a need to interview the interviewers: competition policy reporters.
There were many good reasons for me to attempt this: if the media shape and channel the broader societal narratives about competition policy, we have to know more about the shapers themselves.
With this in mind, I had a pleasure to invite for a conversation the most knowledgeable, impactful and very amicable competition policy journalists – those who are behind the headlines in the general media: Samuel Stolton (Bloomberg), Javier Espinoza (Financial Times) and Lewis Crofts (MLex) for a conversation about the mechanics of the profession as well as their own views on the variety of the issues concerning the evolution of (mainly digital) competition policy.
Among many other things, we discussed:
• how they interact with their sources
• how (not) to communicate your academic research to the media
• which simplifications are necessary and which are not
• interesting stories about the leading competition personalities
(I didn’t succeed much in it I must confess – my interviewees happened to be very professional and very discrete)
• lobbying
• interest groups
• interacting with BigTech
• differences between EU & UK
• of course recommendations to students
......and much more
Not only Lewis, Javier and Samuel are impactful writers – they are also really amazing orators: considered and responsible, but yet witty, informative and open. We had a really interesting conversation, and I invite colleagues and friends to view and feedback.

The Digital Markets Research Hub is an independent academic initiative aiming at scrutinising the functioning of competition/regulation in digital markets. We host one-to-one interviews with the leading policymakers, regulators and practitioners. We also organise online mini-workshops inviting high-profile experts and academics in various fields of digital competition law & policy to discuss the most vibrant issues of the ongoing regulatory reforms in digital markets.
While having our clear normative stand on the matters discussed within the hub, we value different views and invite relevant stakeholders and thinkers representing the whole spectrum of reasonable positions on how to regulate competition in digital markets.
