Join us as we continue our sightseeing in and around Bhedaghat. Our boat ride on the Narmada to view the Marble Rocks was covered in the previous video: • Marble Rocks, Bhedaghat | A Mesmerising Bo... .
This video details a sightseeing trip around Bhedaghat, covering visits to the Chausath Yogini Temple, a ropeway ride to Dhuandhar Waterfall, the Balancing Rock, and Madan Mahal Fort.
The journey begins with a visit to the Chausath Yogini Temple (0:20-0:26), also known as Gauri Shankar Mandir. This 10th-11th century temple, built by the Kalachuri dynasty, features a circular courtyard with 64 shrines dedicated to Yoginis, symbolizing the mandala with Lord Shiva at the center (0:47-1:26). The video explains the significance of Yoginis in Tantric tradition as emanations of divine feminine energy, assisting in achieving supernatural powers and union with ultimate reality (1:29-2:06). Many of the Yogini figures at the site are headless or mutilated, suggesting they were targeted for being "heretical" (2:41-2:58).
Next, the video showcases a ropeway ride to the Dhuandhar Waterfall (3:02-3:23). The ropeway, which had recently become operational after the monsoon break, offers the best views of the waterfall (3:12-3:23). For those interested in travelling with pets, please note that we could have taken our pet beagle along on the ropeway had we booked a full cabin (Rs 840; 6 persons' ticket fare) but we opted out since we were unsure how our pet will react to travelling at a height and the roar of the waterfall. The Dhuandhar Waterfall (4:42-5:19) is characterized by a fine, smoke-like mist, which gives it its name. This mist is created as the Narmada River accelerates and plunges 30 meters over a cliff into a narrow gorge, atomizing upon impact with the jagged marble and basalt below (4:47-5:19). It is reported, however, that during very high monsoon flows, the gorge can get flooded and the drop can become so muted that the waterfall almost disappears from view!
From there we travelled a short distance to view the amazing Balancing Rock (7:25-7:44), which is instructive as each one of us searches for the perfect balance in our lives.
Finally, the video covers the Madan Mahal Fort (7:47-8:20), also known as Madan Mahal or Rani Durgavati Fort. We negotiated the 120 stone steps to take a look at the Fort up close. Built by the Gond dynasty -- a tribal dynasty that ruled in central India from roughly the 14th to 18th centuries -- ruler Madan Shah around the 15th century, it was primarily used as a security outpost (8:06-8:41). The palace complex is situated on a large granite hill and includes structures like a stable, battlement, and stepwell (8:52-9:10). The main palace rests on a massive boulder, and its construction, using stone, lacquered bricks, and lime, is considered a pinnacle of Gondi art (9:13-9:48). The day concludes with a return to the homestay after an exciting day of sightseeing (10:28-11:17).

Acknowledgement: ChatGPT Plus for helpful information and suggestions; Supriya Ghosh for clarifying some aspects related to the flow of the Narmada River, the many wonderful people whom we met in the course of the trip. Thanks also to Driver Deb Chatterjee for taking care of our pet beagle, Siya, as and when it was required. We were well rested at the Malaiya Homestay and felt fresh, alert and energetic throughout the trip to see these wonderful tourist spots. Finally, a big thank you to lady luck. It was our good fortune that the boat ride (covered in the previous video) and ropeway ride had recommenced after the monsoon break just a couple of days prior to our visit.
