One of the most important scoring kicks in Muay Thai, the middle kick or rib kick is the technique that you will be drilling a thousand times on the pads, on the bag and at sparring sessions.
Learning the technical form of the body, how to use your arms and your foot work together with the weight distribution will help your generate speed and power on you kicks.
Technique break down.
Rear leg kick:
• Take a step with your lead leg on a 45 angle outside of your opponent's fight stance.
• Switch your hands by dropping your lead hand beside your body and place your rear hand beside your head just touching your ear. By doing this you will automatically place your shoulder in the right angle for the kick.
• Thrown the rear kick to the rib, aiming to hit the target with your shin and switch your hands in the same time.
• Switch your hands back really fast by bringing your lead hand back up to your guard and swing your rear hand just past your knee. Swinging you hand too far back will result on less power and make you unbalanced, making it difficult to return to stance after the kick is thrown.
• Once you hit the target, bring your leg back fast to your stance minimising the chances of getting your leg caught.
Lead leg kick - Switch kick:
• Switch your legs and step on a 45 angle outside of your opponent's stance.
• Switch your hands in the same time you switch your leg.
• Throw the kick to the rib, aiming to hit the target with your shin, and switch your hands back in the same time.
• Once you hit the target, bring your leg back fast, taking two steps back to your original stance.
