Disposable contact lenses are convenient, but create more waste, as each lens comes in a small plastic package. But these packages can be recycled! Some glasses stores are offering discounts to customers who return packages and are even launching recycling programs. It only takes six contact lens cases to make a carabiner, and 10 can be turned into a comb.

Lots of people wear contact lenses every day, helping them see clearly without the inconvenience of physical glasses. Now glasses stores are offering discounts for returning the small plastic cases they come in for recycling.

Help us to throw away the foil covering and remove the contact solution, just keeping the polypropylene plastic case. Once you’ve accumulated a number of them, just bring them to us. When we have enough, we’ll find some companies that can remanufacture them.

Most contact cases are made from polypropylene, which is lightweight, heat-resistant, and easy to recycle and remold. Just six of these cases can be transformed into a carabiner, and 10 could be remade into a comb.

This cup was made from a large amount of contact lens cases. This carabiner was molded in one piece, so it keeps properties from the contact cases, including the material’s flexibility. We didn’t expect that in early December, a lot of people started asking us how to recycle them, so we started setting up a recycling form. Now we’ve already collected over 100 kilograms.

Glasses stores have begun offering rewards to customers who return contact cases. This makes recycling them not only sustainable, but financially beneficial, too.
