“I Nervously Asked, ‘Will You Be My Wife?’ She Smiled, ‘I Thought You’d Never Ask.’”

Описание: I'm sitting here right now and my hands won't stop shaking. I keep looking at my phone, reading the same text message over and over again, trying to convince myself that what just happened in the last hour was real. My whole life just turned upside down and I need to tell someone about this before I actually lose my mind. So here's what you need to know. My best friend Jessica and I have known each other since we were sixteen years old. We met during summer break at this community pool where we both had part time jobs. I was the guy who had to fish out leaves and random toys from the water, and she worked at the snack bar selling overpriced hot dogs and ice cream that melted faster than anyone could eat it. On my very first day, I slipped on the wet concrete while carrying a long pool net and fell straight into the shallow end, fully clothed with my phone in my pocket and everything. Everyone around the pool stopped and stared at me like I was the biggest idiot they'd ever seen. But Jessica just laughed, not in a mean way, but in this genuine way that made me start laughing too even though I was completely embarrassed and soaking wet. She brought me a towel and a free hot dog that was slightly burnt on one side and we started talking. From that moment on, we were basically attached at the hip.
We did everything together that whole summer and then kept hanging out when school started again. Late night drives to the grocery store at midnight just because we were bored. Movie nights where we'd watch the same films we'd already seen a hundred times. Long conversations about random stuff like whether aliens exist or why pizza tastes better when you eat it cold the next morning. That kind of friendship where you don't have to pretend to be anyone else because the other person already knows all your weird habits and likes you anyway. Our whole friendship is built on joking around and teasing each other constantly. I'd tell her that her driving makes me fear for my life every single time I get in her car. She'd tell me that I dress like I grabbed whatever was on top of the laundry pile without looking. It's just how we talk to each other. It's comfortable and easy and fun. And because we joke about literally everything, we've made ridiculous plans over the years. We've talked about quitting our jobs and becoming professional dog walkers who only walk really tiny dogs. We've planned imaginary road trips across the country with no actual destination in mind. We've even joked about marriage sometimes, you know, in that totally unserious way where you say stuff like, "If neither of us is married by the time we're forty, we should just marry each other so we're not alone forever." Normal best friend stuff that doesn't mean anything, right?
So flash forward to tonight. It's just a regular Friday evening and there's nothing special about it at all. Jessica called me around six asking if I could come over and help her rearrange furniture in her living room. Now, anyone who really knows Jessica understands that this is just her way of saying she's bored and wants someone to hang out with. I drove over to her place, which is this small apartment on the third floor of an old building that doesn't have an elevator, so I always get a workout just visiting her. When I got there, she had already moved some stuff around and the whole living room looked like a tornado had gone through it. Her couch was pulled away from the wall, there were books stacked on the floor, and her coffee table was pushed into the corner at a weird angle. She wanted to try putting the couch in a different spot because she read some article online about how furniture placement can affect your mood or your energy or something like that. I didn't really understand it but I agreed to help anyway because that's what friends do.
