I remember sitting at my kitchen table at eleven o'clock at night, staring at the Weston & Hart application page on my laptop, my cursor hovering over the submit button for a full ten minutes. The position was for a junior analyst. The firm was one of the most respected consulting companies in the country. And I, Jake Calloway, was a twenty-six year old guy from Columbus, Ohio, with a state school degree, a beat-up Honda Civic, and exactly zero connections in the industry. Every reasonable part of my brain told me to close the laptop and go to bed. Instead, I clicked submit. Then I closed the laptop and went to bed anyway, because I was pretty sure nothing would come of it.
Three weeks later, I got a call from their HR department. Two interviews after that, I had the job.
My mom cried. My dad shook my hand and then also cried. My college roommate Tom, who had been listening to me stress about my career for three years straight, bought me a six pack of my favorite beer and told me I'd better not forget him when I got rich. I wasn't going to get rich. Junior analysts at consulting firms don't exactly retire early. But I was going to get a real start, a genuine foothold in an industry I'd been trying to break into since my sophomore year of college. That felt like more than enough.
My first day at Weston & Hart was a Monday in March, and I wore the nicest shirt I owned. The office was on the fourteenth floor of a glass building in downtown Chicago. Floor to ceiling windows. Clean white walls. The kind of place where everything looks expensive without trying to look expensive. I introduced myself to my team lead, a calm and organized man named Greg, who showed me to my desk, walked me through the basics, and then handed me a stack of files that could have doubled as a doorstop.
