Amaterasu: The Sun Goddess of Japan
Amaterasu Omikami is the central deity of the Shinto religion and the Goddess of the Sun. Her name translates to "Great Divinity Illuminating Heaven." She is revered as the ruler of the Takamagahara (High Plain of Heaven) and is the guardian of the Japanese people.
According to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), Amaterasu was born from the left eye of the creator god Izanagi while he was purifying himself in a river. She has two major siblings: Tsukuyomi (the Moon God) and Susanoo (the Storm God).
Her most famous myth involves a conflict with her chaotic brother, Susanoo. Upset by his behavior, she hid inside the Ama-no-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave), plunging the world into darkness and chaos. The other gods eventually lured her out using a party and a mirror. When she emerged, sunlight was restored to the universe.
Amaterasu is believed to be the direct ancestor of the Japanese Imperial Family. To this day, the Grand Shrine of Ise is dedicated to her and houses the Yata no Kagami (Sacred Mirror), which is said to contain her spirit. This mirror is one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, symbolizing wisdom and truth.
