Atargatis was the great goddess of northern Syria in classical antiquity, revered primarily as a deity of fertility, water, and protection. Her worship was centered in Hierapolis (modern-day Manbij), northeast of Aleppo, where her grand temple stood as a symbol of her divine influence.
Known to the Greeks as Derceto, Atargatis was often depicted as a mermaid-like figure, combining human and fish features. This imagery reflected her dominion over water and life.
The dove and the fish were sacred to her—doves symbolizing love and peace, and fish representing fertility and abundance
Her cult was widespread across the Near East and later absorbed into Greek and Roman traditions, where she was associated with Aphrodite, Astarte, and Ishtar.
Rituals included elaborate ceremonies, offerings, and even self-castration by male devotees in some regions, reflecting intense devotion and transformation rites.
Her temple at Hierapolis was rebuilt around 300 BCE by Queen Stratonice, wife of Seleucus I, which helped spread her worship through Greek merchants and mercenaries.
