In this video, I demonstrate a simple yet powerful method for finding a broken conductor inside a multi-core cable using just a signal generator and an oscilloscope.
I injected a 2 MHz signal into one of the cable’s cores and grounded the remaining conductors.
Then, using a sniffer antenna on the scope probe, I traced the electromagnetic field along the cable. The signal was strong and clear—until it suddenly disappeared exactly where I had cut the wire halfway down the length!
This technique works because the driven conductor radiates a small capacitive field that the sniffer can pick up.
Once the core is broken, the signal can no longer propagate beyond the open point, allowing you to pinpoint the fault.
It’s a great way to visualize what’s happening in cable fault detection, and it shows how useful a scope and generator can be beyond the lab bench.
