Recently, together with a fellow University of Kent alumni, I had the immense honour and pleasure to mediate a conversation with a Venezuelan refugee living in Athens, in Prosfygika. The history of Prosfygika is extremely interesting and it is impossible to capture its complicated, unusual and fascinating story in a single post. A complex of 8 buildings in modernist Bauhaus style (one of the first representations of this style in Athens), built between 1934-1936 to host the Asian-Minor Greek refugees, with a very difficult history and seemingly in decay nowadays, is still servicing its original purpose and ideas 100 years later. People who have travelled for thousands of kilometres to find refuge and a safer life have formed a community which represents exactly the ideas of the Bauhaus Manifesto for community, cooperation and practicality. Buildings which 100 years later still accommodate those who need help.
As a fellow citizen of Athens, for already two years, this is also a very Athenian story. A city that has experienced so many fascinating events throughout the decades, a place full of history and contradictions, it always manages to reveal great cases of solidarity and compassion. Qualities which I find very Athenian and which can be found in Prosfygika.
