Abstract: The field of classical novae is in the midst of a revolution. Novae
are panchromatic transient events triggered by a thermonuclear runaway
on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary star system. Our
understanding of how novae are powered has been recently altered with
Fermi-LAT gamma-ray satellite establishing novae as a new class of GeV
gamma-ray sources and cosmic particle accelerators, which has brought
new insights into the role of shocks in powering these events. In this
talk, I will be highlighting the efforts we are carrying out, using
multi-wavelength observations from a diversity of ground- and
space-based facilities (such as SALT, SOAR, VLA, Swift, NuSTAR, and
Fermi), to better understand: how shocks are formed in novae? What are
the mechanisms of mass ejection in novae? And what powers the
bolometric luminosity of these enigmatic events? The implications of
answering these questions extend to other shock-powered transients
such as Type Ia-CSM SNe, Superluminous SNe, stellar mergers, and tidal
disruption events.
