HI Intensity Mapping with MeerKAT dishes

Abstract: Recently, the 21cm emission line of Neutral Hydrogen (HI) hyperfine spin-flip transition has been proposed as another cosmological probe of the LSS. Instead of observing the HI emission line from individual galaxies, cosmologists proposed to measure the total HI intensity of the galaxies within large voxels, a technique known as HI intensity mapping (IM). The HI IM has been explored in a few different experiments by measuring the cross-correlation function between HI IM survey and an optical galaxy survey. With a new generation of large radio telescope array, HI IM has been proposed as an important exploration for cosmology studies.
The MeerKAT array, as one of the SKA pathfinder, is ready for observation. With 64 dishes, the MeerKAT array is known to be a powerful equipment for HI IM. We proposed a pilot survey for HI IM and collected ~10hr observation time using about 60 dishes, targeting the WiggleZ 11hr field. Using the pilot survey data, we test out the data analysis pipeline and aim to have detection of the cross-correlation power spectrum. In the meanwhile, we also explored the 1/f noise property of the MeerKAT receiver system. I will talk about the detailed analysis for the systematic 1/f noise and the current stage of power spectrum measurements.
