Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around three miles east of central Nottingham, is the town of Netherfield.
Geographically, Netherfield is situated along the northern bank of the River Trent, in the Borough of Gedling at the eastern fringe of Nottingham.
The town's name means, simply, 'lower field [within the Parish of Gedling]', which was literally the case prior to the railway era. This began to change from 1874, when the Great Northern Railway chose this as the location for the start of its line into the coalfields of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, building a marshalling yard here to collect coal traffic for forwarding to London, as well as an engine shed and workshops. Housing for the workers followed, and the railway station began its passenger service in 1878.
The station was initially named Colwick after the neighbouring village, before being renamed, first to Netherfield and Colwick, and subsequently to Netherfield as it's known today. The station is situated on the Nottingham–Grantham Line, although a second station lies within the town centre, namely Carlton, which forms part of the Nottingham–Lincoln Line (seen at the end of the walk next to the level crossing).
