Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around 15 miles north of Nottingham, is the town of Mansfield Woodhouse.
The 'Woodhouse' component of the name refers in a literal sense to its location on the edge of Sherwood Forest, thus distinguishing it as a separate settlement from the neighbouring town of Mansfield about a mile to the south. The Romans are believed to have had a presence in the area here, as implied by the discovery of the remains of two villas in the 1780s.
In 1304 a great fire destroyed much of the settlement, leading to a subsequent rebuilding in locally quarried stone. This has led to its cohesive stone aesthetic, although the buildings of today are typically of 19th century origin.
Just south of the town centre's main street is the Parish Church of St Edmund. This dates from shortly after the great fire of 1304 as part of the rebuilding of Mansfield Woodhouse, with some 19th century restoration.
In 1875 the railway arrived in Mansfield Woodhouse courtesy of the Midland Railway. The station was closed to passengers in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts. However, it reopened in 1995 thanks to the Robin Hood Line restoration project. The station of today forms part of said line, which runs between Nottingham and Worksop.
