The Purcell School Chamber Soloists at Wigmore Hall: Schoenberg and Mahler

A performance of Pierrot Lunaire is always a special event, all the more so when played by young people. Students from the UK’s oldest music school are joined by two international, prize-winning singers in a unique project to mark Schoenberg’s 150th anniversary. Iain Farrington’s ingenious arrangement of Mahler’s youthful song cycle, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen for chamber orchestra, completes the programme.

The Purcell School is one of the worlds’ finest schools for young musicians aged 10 to 18 and the oldest music school in the UK. Based in Hertfordshire, just outside of London, the School provides a rounded education with music at its heart to around 180 talented students, most of whom go on to the top conservatoires and colleges for music, often with scholarships. Whilst at Purcell, students share a common bond in their passion for music with a community boasting creativity and mutual support.
