Päivi Jaana Maarit Alafrantti (born 8 May 1964 in Tervola ) is a Finnish javelin thrower .
She won the European Championship gold medal in 1990 and was elected Athlete of the Year in the same year.
During her career, Alafrantti represented her parent club Tervola Terävä until 1983 , then Tyrnävä Tempau from 1983 to 1986 and then Viipuri Urheilijoti .
At the European Championships in Split , Alafrantti did not get any results in the qualifying round, when her only successful throw was ruled to have landed on her lap.
Finland lodged a protest, which was accepted, and Alafrantti thus reached the final. Alafrantti was the first Finnish women's European champion (and medallist) in athletics since the 1974 Games in Rome .
The previous Finnish European champion in the javelin was Hannu Siitonen in 1974, and the next was Antti Ruuskanen in 2014.
Alafrantti has represented Finland in numerous prestigious competitions.
She was tenth at the Seoul Olympics and qualified for the Barcelona Olympics .
At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he placed eighth and qualified for the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart .
She also qualified for the 1994 European Championships in Helsinki .
Alafrantti won the Finnish javelin throw championship in 1989 and 1993.
She won Finnish Championship silver in 1988 , 1990 , 1991 and 1992 and bronze in 1994 .
Alafrant's best result was 67.68 in the Split final on 30 August 1990.
She was coached by Jorma Markus and Tiina Lillak .
Especially before his years of success in the javelin, Alafrantti also competed in the shot put , discus and all-around events.
She has two bronze medals ( 1984 and 1987 ) in the shot put from the Kaleva Games.
In addition, Alafrantti achieved gold in the shot put in 1987 and silver in 1988 at the Finnish Indoor Championships.
In addition to athletics, Alafrantti was a weightlifter .
She won the Finnish Championship gold medal in the sport and was ninth at the World Championships in 1987.
Alafrantti was also a Finnish handball silver medalist with HIFK in 1987.
She worked in maintenance duties for the 2004 Paralympics .
After his active career, he has worked as a physiotherapist in Espoo and Rovaniemi.
