About Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Author: Jane Austen
Published: 1813
Genre: Romantic Fiction, Social Satire
Setting: England, early 19th century (mostly in the countryside of Hertfordshire, Derbyshire, and Kent)
---

🖋 Introduction

Pride and Prejudice is one of the most famous novels by Jane Austen, often considered her masterpiece. It explores themes of love, marriage, class, pride, and misunderstanding through witty dialogue and sharp social observation. The novel gives us a vivid picture of English society in the early 1800s.
---

💞 Main Plot

The story revolves around Elizabeth Bennet, the intelligent and spirited second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a wealthy but proud gentleman.

Mrs. Bennet’s main concern is to marry off her five daughters — Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia — to wealthy men. When Mr. Bingley, a rich young man, comes to live at Netherfield Park, excitement spreads in the Bennet family. Bingley soon develops affection for Jane Bennet, the eldest and most gentle of the sisters.

At the same time, Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy, Bingley’s close friend. Though Darcy is handsome and rich, his pride and reserved nature offend Elizabeth. Their relationship begins with misunderstanding and prejudice — Elizabeth dislikes his arrogance, while Darcy disapproves of her lower social status.

As the story unfolds, both characters go through deep personal growth. Elizabeth learns that first impressions can be misleading, while Darcy learns humility and compassion. Eventually, both overcome their pride and prejudice and fall in love.
