The Burr Trail Road and Long Canyon in Central Utah

Описание: The Burr Trail Road is a must drive for anyone who is in the area. It basically runs West to East from Utah Highway 12. It will eventually terminate at the Notom-Bullfrog Road (Approximately 45 miles) which runs from Utah Highway 24 in the North all the way to the Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell. Much of this area is within the Capitol Reef National Park and is known as the “Water-Pocket Fold”. But before you reach the Notom-Bullfrog Road you will need to negotiate the Burr Trail Switchbacks. This section is not for the faint of heart but just about any vehicle can navigate it. Here is a link to a video by Doug Printz that shows what you will encounter    • The Burr Trail Switchbacks   We have traveled it twice…Once up and once down. I would recommend going up. Doug filmed his video going down on a motorcycle. To go up you will need to approach the Burr Trail Switchbacks from the Notom-Bullfrog Road. The two times we used this road it was heavily “Washboarded” and it was not a comfortable ride even with our tires “Aired-Down”. Both times were in the Fall so maybe in early Spring the road may be better. Also, from the Burr Trail Road you can access several interesting areas such as Long Canyon (Actually part of the Burr Trail Road), Singing Canyon (About 11 miles from the Highway 12 turnoff on the left), the Upper Muley Twist Trail just before the switchbacks if you came from Highway 12 (The upper section is 4-Wheel drive only but it is a relatively short distance and can be hiked), Strike Valley Overlook, Circle Cliffs and our favorite the “Wolverine Loop”. It is a dirt/gravel road that starts and ends off of the Burr Trail Road. It is approximately 28 miles with a few offshoot trails that you can take. I would recommend a 4-Wheel drive vehicle or at least a high clearance SUV or truck. That being said, we actually encountered a Toyota Prius (I am sure it was a rental car) with 4 young adults (Two boys and two girls). We stopped and chatted with them a bit to make sure they had water and they were OK. We asked how their car was handling the road and they told us that when they got stuck, they would just lift it out of the hole and move on (Awe… to be young and bullet-proof again).
