A few months back I acquired another siren, being a rare fourth generation Sterling Siren Fire Alarm Co. MOD. F (Factory) siren. For those not in the know, the Type/MOD. F was the predecessor to the Sterling F-2, which later became the Sentry F-2. Mine in particular is a fourth generation model, which is the last version of the siren made before the F-2 came out in the early 1970s. The Type F is a rare siren (Less than a dozen left in service and more in private possession) so I was very lucky to find one on eBay thanks to a seller who didn't know what it was worth and sold it for a low price.
Mine is not in the best shape overall, with some bad dents on the projector horn, and a very stiff rotor. I decided to work on it before today's test, putting new oil into the brass sleeve bearings as the old oil had gone dry. I was only able to get one of the two bearings, as I was unable to locate the other hole in time. 12:30 rapidly approached, and I didn't have time to put the intake and projector back on, so I just reattached the core to the stand and got ready. Once the screwed up ATI went off, I let her growl and then blast a few times to break her in. The F clearly still isn't working perfectly, likely due to one set of bearings still being dry, but it did coast better than it did originally. It reaches max pitch just fine, and clearly the motor itself is in good working order unlike many Type Fs. It definitely isn't as loud as my Model L, although having the intake off probably was responsible for that.
Once I get the siren properly running, I will be testing it again with the projector and intake on to see how it performs. That'll most likely be next Monday. Stay tuned!
